W8CBD Museum Ship Operation Completed!!

The W8CDB crew completed the Museum Ship Weekend operation from Rogers City.

W8CDB made 2072 QSO's including the duplicate stations that we worked. We were able to work all 50 states, 9 Canadian provinces, and 17 DX countries (excluding K & VE). We had at least one QSO with 29 of the museum ships that were on the air. We seemed to have a pipeline to Ohio and NY. We worked 134 stations from each state. See the "Statistics Page" of the website for a detailed QSO breakdown. Thanks Again for all the calls!

W8CDB  operated on Museum Ships Weekend

SS Carl D. Bradley Memorial station (W8CDB) completed the Museum Ships weekend operation from Rogers City, Michigan. Secondary to all the radio contacts that we made was the fact that we discovered a great community on the shores of Lake Huron. The City's pride and their place in the history of the Great Lakes are very evident. The people were great and very friendly.   They rolled out the red carpet for us. We were supplied with a great place to operate and free donuts and coffee!!  I recommend that when in the upper portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Rogers City is a “must visit” location.  In addition to the "Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum" and the  "Carl D. Bradley House" there are a number of other local  points of interest, nice little stores and good restaurants. But all that being said, It's just a very nice, well kept and beautiful little community on the shores of Lake Huron. We all are looking forward to another visit.

W8CDB Crew Visited by Frank Mays!

Frank Mays, the only living survivour of the Carl D. Bradley paid a vist to the operation site.  Franks visit was arranged by Dave Erickson of the "Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum".  Both Frank amd Dave told tales of sailing the Great Lakes. This was all a first time experiance for most of us and we hung on every word they spoke. Frank's tale of survival is detailed in his book titled "If We Make it 'til Daylight".

Making over 2,000 contacts was lots of fun, but our visit with Frank was a weekend hi-lite.

SS Carl D. Bradley Background: The SS Carl D. Bradley was the pride of Rogers City Michigan. On November 18th, 1958 the Carl D. Bradley's days of service came to an end as the result of a violent storm on Lake Michigan. At approximately 5:30pm on that evening she broke in two and sank almost immediately off Gull Island. Only two men were rescued from the thirty-five crewmen aboard. The city of Rogers City was overwhelmed with grief. Most of the crewmen were residents of of Rogers City. See the below  informative video and other links on this web page for more information on the SS Carl D. Bradley.
